Nanoforms of Titanium Carbides: Synthesis and Modeling

The review of the modern results in field of the preparation and computational simulation of the
nanostructures based on the titanium carbide as a typical member of the broad family of d and f metal car-
bides is presented. The possible routes of the synthesis of various Ti-C nanostructures: molecular clus-
ters, nanocrystallites, nanospheres, nanowires, nanorods etc. are summarized; the morphology, atomic
structure and the available physico-chemical properties are described. The theoretical models of the
atomic structure and properties of the novel types of nanoforms for the system Ti-C (endo-,
exo-titanofullerenes, "hybrid" Ti-C nanostructures based on the carbon nanotubes - so called
nano-peapods, nano-cables) are presented. The possible applications of Ti-C nanomaterials - for hydro-
gen storage, as the components of nanoceramics or as spintronic materials are discussed.
